Discussion of Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router
Posted Dec 28, 2007 - I went out and bought one of these at Best Buy today. Before this I had a separate Router & Airport base (802.11g wireless) connected to my Macintosh tower, 2 wireless laptops and an iPhone. This, plus minor networking experience on the Windows platform may have helped me out, but I've got to say that I have had no problems in the setup or performance in the few hours that I've had it. As a Macintosh owner, the only thing the CD holds of any interest is the user's manual (in PDF format). Copy this to your hard drive if you want quick and easy access to it, but otherwise ignore the CD and the labels on the router extolling you to not even think about connecting it before you have run the CD. (You can safely ignoring threats about what it will do to you pet goldfish and other household pets if you DON'T install the CD first. First, I highly recommend that you use Firefox instead of Safari. For some reason if I changed more than one setting before clicking "Save Settings" I would get an error about the connection being dropped, and when I would go back to the page that I was in, it would be back at the defaults. Also, Wireless/Wireless MAC Filter/Edit MAC List would not save the changes, so it was at this point that I changed over to Firefox and had no further problems. Also, make sure that you follow the checklist on Page 6, Chapter 2 "Wireless Securty Checklist" That said, this is not likely a good device for the Mac owner who "has no idea what all those settings are," unless you have an Intel Mac running Windows and can run the install CD. If not, but you are comfortable with configuring a router, this seems to be a good, solid solution.

Discussion of Netgear RangeMax NEXT Wireless Router
Posted Jan 14, 2007 - There is one glitch that I can't figure out with this router. Anytime one of the wireless computers tries to access gmail.com, the router freezes. It doesn't happen when the desktop that is wired to the router accesses gmail. It's just the wireless machines. What might the gmail site be trying to do that causes the loading to stop and the router to freeze?

Discussion of Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router
Posted Oct 11, 2006 - I have a Linksys router and I am trying to connect my computer and my roommates to a network. However I live in a building that provides a shared DSL connection through ethernet port. When I connect my router to the ethernet port and my PC to the router I have no connectivity. I am unable to get any connection and cannot set up the router to start a network. I called tech support who weren't able to help me. Do you have any suggestions as to what I might do.

Discussion of US Robotics Wireless MAXg Router With Print Server
Posted Sep 23, 2006 - USR 5461 can't handle high number of connections typical of p2p such as torrents for sustained periods. Forget about 24/7 usage. USR support claims it should handle 500 connections without a problem...and it will, for a several minutes. I tried allowing my torrent program to use max 500 [even though my original setting was just 350 max connections] and the router lost DNS function and admin access in less than 2 hours. I had to remove power to reboot it. Other USR support person said one of their business level routers is needed for serious p2p use, as the small amount of internal memory gets rapidly overloaded. Seems a timed flush would cure that. even with little or no load, the router causes browser connections to timeout. I was hoping to be able to form a LAN to access my netprinter, and that all works fine. But the frustration of constant timeouts and loss of DNS periodically makes this plan unworkable.

Discussion of Netgear WN802T Rangemax Next Wireless Access Point
Posted Jul 18, 2006 - Why is "aceess point" price almost 80% over a price of an entire router??? Just compare the price of WN802T with the price of WNR854T! I almost tend to take a $30 adapter for a notebook card and the card for $100. This simply does not make any sense. Thomas
Discussion of Global Marketing Partners GPRS CompactFlash Card for Laptop & PDA by Ambicom
Posted Jul 14, 2006 - Does anyone know the implications of putting an ATT sim in this thing? Up until about a week ago, I had good service on my gprs world phone. Then, all the towers went away except for one. It no longer says Cingular or Cingular Wireless on the screen. As a consequence, with the same signal strength as before, the gprs goes to pot routinely. The 611 operators get ticked at me every time I call and the call is dropped or only one side can be heard. They always ask me to call back on a landline and they are almost universally in a bad mood by the time we get down to the nitty gritty. What do you suppose will happen if I start using the Ambicom card? Thanks

Discussion of SMC MEDIA ADAPTER 802.11G 54MBPS

It's a nice 802.11G 54MBPS adapter with the only bug that the last screen, the one with the MP3 tag, reads weird characters instead of the song title, artist, etc. For a view of the problem go to: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15896517 It sems that it's a problem with their firmware. I'm still witing for a response from SMC tech support about this problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem?
