Inspired by the blockbuster film and drawing from more than 60 years of comics and movies from the DC Comics universe, Superman Returns: The Videogame is the ultimate open-world super hero experience. For the first time ever, explore the game environment not only horizontally but vertically as well. Revolutionary flight mechanics give you full command of your aerial maneuvers. Use them to explore a Metropolis that is not only expansive (80 sq. miles and more than 7,000 buildings), but also changes dynamically based on how you play. Experience what it’s like to be Superman like never before with Superman Returns: The Videogame. minimize

3 Star Review Entertaining for a while

Strengths:

Superman powers and huge world

Weaknesses:

Not much variety

Posted May 29, 2007 - First off, the good. Superman looks pretty good and the world is a large place to explore. Flying around is enjoyable for a while. Unfortunately, the problems you solve in that world are very similar and begin to feel like chores. This provides my son with a chance to play as Superman, but does not bring a great story or presentation to enjoy.

2 Star Review Superman Returns

Strengths:

Superman

Weaknesses:

environment, repeditive battles

Posted 1 year ago - Played with this title a bit before getting bored. It’s the same enemies time after time. Once you figure them out, it’s a cakewalk. Not much variety in the game and there are only a few references to the Superman mythos that are of any interest. The only redeeming quality of this game is controlling Superman himself, it’s done really well in the 3rd person view. Too bad the story, poor graphics and empty environments overshadow Superman himself. I think the creators rushed this one out and it shows.

2 Star Review Ok but got boring quick

Strengths:

Active game control during figh scene and can get it cheap

Weaknesses:

Repetitive, short and bland.

Posted Apr 30, 2008 - My expectations were raised, oddly enough, when the game was delayed and the demo was released. 'Superman' was originally supposed to come out in May of '06 to coincide with the release of the feature film. When it was delayed, I mistakenly thought that was the staff at EA saying to itself, "OK, there's more interest here then we thought, lets sink a little more time and effort into this one." The game was subsequently pushed to November to match up with the film's DVD release. Then the demo for the game hit xBox live and I was legitimately impressed. Metropolis was huge, the environment was interactive, the flight mechanics were solid; it reminded me of 'Ultimate Spider-Man', just with Superman. The graphics and the combat system were a little below-average, but I wrote that off as a problem they're working on. It was just a demo after all, I expected it to be a little rough around the edges. While nothing that I enjoyed about the game was changed, I'm disappointed to say that none of these issues I had were fixed for the game's final release either. Not to mention, there's very little to the game outside of the demo I played. Instead of using the extra time EA took to get 'Superman' released to add content, EA seemed to just seem to multiply what was there already. Just for example, there isn't enough diversity in the enemies Superman will confront. You fight Metallo and his minions fairly early in the game. You'll be fighting those same annoying robots the whole game. There are only about five or six actual boss fights in the game, none of whom I found particularly difficult. One of which is the same character twice! I'd have loved to have seen more of Supe's rogues gallery. There aren't many side missions you have to distract yourself with either. It would have been awesome to involve more of Superman's supporting cast to pass along side objectives. As I said before, there's not more diversity, it's as if they just doubled what was already there.

3 Star Review XBox360 Superman Returns

Strengths:

Inexpensive, Flying mechanism, Create your own combos, Good graphics

Weaknesses:

too many robots to fight with: repetitive task. Short, weak story line, childlike button smashing ...

Posted Mar 29, 2008 - I guess you get what you pay for. And for $10, this game worth ... that much. If you still want to try this game out after reading all the reviews, don't pay more than $10, or go get a rental. Because it will get bored pretty quick, with all the repetitive tasks, killing robots, button smashing your way to the end. There are a few cool things about this game, like zooming at speed of sound along the ocean water, flying straight up to the air ... the graphics aren't that bad either. If you have a good surround sound with your xbox, and a big sceen TV, you might want to turn on the fan and zoom around the metropolis with superman.

3 Star Review Superman Returns (360)

Strengths:

Super powers implemented well, decent graphics

Weaknesses:

Repetitive gameplay, no replay value

Posted Nov 27, 2007 - Superman Returns is a movie tie-in game from the recent Superman movie. For a Superman game, the powers are implemented well, especially the flying. The graphics look good, though certainly not some of the best on the 360, and much better than the PS2 or Xbox versions. The gameplay is mission-based with random things to do about the city, though that's the extent of the gameplay, which turns into bouts of button-mashing. Once done with the game, there's no replay value, as there's no reason to go back into the game with no multiplayer. For Superman fans, it'll be OK to pick up on the cheap.

3 Star Review Superman Returns

Strengths:

They got the flying mechanics down

Weaknesses:

There isn't much to do after the fun of flying around wears off

Posted Nov 26, 2007 - Superman Returns starts off well enough - the sense of speed and power as Superman is done very well in this game. You will have fun flying around and using Superman's powers, for a bit... Then you will get to the actual game which has you fighting the same enemy types over and over throughout the huge gameworld (Metropolis of course). Unfortunately there isn't much else to do in Metropolis: no hidden building interiors with side missions, no secrets of any kind, really, to find. This game is worth it only if you are a huge fan of Superman and have been dying to get a sense of actually being Superman in a video game. But that fun will be short lived so wait till you can get the game dirt cheap or simply rent it.

2 Star Review He probably should have stayed missing

Strengths:

Large number of superpowers. Good soundtrack.

Weaknesses:

Little variation in enemies. A lot of boring missions.

Posted Nov 2, 2007 - As a big fan of the comic I was looking forward to the game which did not meet my expectations. It is a decent game to pick up for achievement purposes. It is unfortunately par for the course when it comes to licensed games.

4 Star Review Super deal

Strengths:

Superman's powers faithfully recreated

Weaknesses:

Same enemies over and over

Posted Oct 26, 2007 - I really liked this game, but Supes is one of my favorite made up characters so I'm a little biased. Flying around is fun and Mongul is a cool villian. A lot more could be done with this game engine and a reworking of the fight mechanics. Still, Superman Returns is cheap now, and I had a good time while it lasted. I'm hoping for a much more polished sequel, with a Doomsday fight thrown in.

2 Star Review Decent Superhero game...Great Superman game...

Strengths:

+Very good Superman game +Have all of Superman's powers +Flying around the city is fun +Easy achievements +Large city to explore

Weaknesses:

-Not authentic Superman experience -Graphics not impressive -Very short game -Story for game is lame -Just get the demo

Posted Jul 27, 2007 - Superman Returns had all the potential in the world but falls short. The game does a good job in making you believe you are Superman. You have all of Superman powers and you gain new moves/upgrades as you progress through the game. Game play is similar to Spider-man 2/Hulk Ultimate Destruction. You go around the city searching for missions. Flying around the city is awesome and is honestly the best part of this game. Unfortunately missions do not make you feel like very heroic. Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen are only seen via short cut scenes. Combat is uninspiring as most opponents can be taken out with simple button mashing. As you fly through the city you'll notice plenty of graphical errors as well. The game can be completed in a few hours and replay value is zero. Overall, even if you are a Superman fan I'd suggest just downloading the demo. Your money would be better spent elsewhere.

2 Star Review Fun fame, but lack depth

Strengths:

Graphics Control Style Growth of Character Fun challenges

Weaknesses:

Repetitive Repetitive Repetitive

Posted Jul 14, 2007 - I thought this was a fun game, but the challenges and mini games were what did it for me. The map was large but everything was detailed and ornate. I thought the control and flying style was innovative. The story line itself was totally lacking. Each level was the same, bash some enemies, frequently the same ones as before, and continue. Overall its a game I wish I had rented.

2 Star Review Superman Returns to a badly designed game

Strengths:

Superman License. Flight mechanics World is huge

Weaknesses:

Everything just feels a little subpar

Posted Mar 31, 2007 - To tie in with the DVD release, EA has released a game by the same name. Superman's video game track record has been less than stellar. Unfortunately, Superman Returns isn't much better. To the game's credit, Metropolis is huge and flying around it is one of the highlights of the game. I'd almost prefer, if this mechanic had been perfected, an entire game based around flying. Sadly, the rest of the game suffers. Superman is set to save Metropolis for various villains. But it never just never takes off well. The entire game feels rushed. To its credit, there are a couple of mini-games tossed in for good measure. Fans of Superman can have some fun with this release, but everyone else should avoid.
