Story line and everything else

Posted Jun 26, 2005 - This game does have excellent graphics. The problem is that's pretty much all it has going for it. The story line to this game is lame, and cliched. It's unfortunate too, because the Xbox needs more good RPGs.

3 Star Review Syberia (Xbox)

Strengths:

(1) Provides a different experience as opposed to typical console game (2) Interesting story (3) Unique art style gives world and environments a feeling that they could really exist

Weaknesses:

(1) Slow, plodding, aged gameplay is not for everyone (2) Will look messed up on HDTVs unless you disable 1080i and 720p HD settings on XBOX (can leave 420p on)

Posted Oct 28, 2005 - Syberia's gameplay harkens back to Adventure games, such as Sierra's King's Quest and Space Quest series. While this genre has seen it's popularity soar in the PC market years ago, it has rarely been brought to home consoles. As such, this game is really for a certain type of gamer. It is more of a slower paced, interactive story where you move through a very linear path, accomplishing simple tasks and solving simple puzzles. The main draw for a game of this type is the story it delivers, and I think Syberia provides an entertaining story. You are witness to a place and time out of an artistic fantasy, where strange and beautiful machinations are the main commodity. Much like the Myst series, a majority of the entertainment value is derived from the wonder and inspiration of the fantastical inventions. I was able to purchase this game at a bargain price and would recommend it if you can get it cheaply and are open to experiencing a different type of game.

4 Star Review Syberia

Strengths:

Great graphics, excellent story, interesting gameworld

Weaknesses:

Slow gameplay (point and click adventure), difficult game interface, poor voice acting

Posted Jul 19, 2005 - I seem to have barely scratched the surface of this game, but the story is engaging and very rewarding. The gameplay is slow (just by nature of the game-type), but if you can get past that, the game is very charming. This is a game that requires quite a bit of thought for solving puzzles and mysteries. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out what to do next, but this is the exception more than the rule. This is an interesting game, that is fun to play along with someone who is typically turned off by all of the twitch-oriented gameplay. My wife and I have logged several hours into the game, and have enjoyed it thoroughly.

4 Star Review Good adventure game

Strengths:

Great, detailed prerendered backgrounds

Weaknesses:

some hard puzzles

Posted Jul 30, 2005 - Ah, adventure games. A game of a dying breed, Syberia is a breath of fresh air. For fans of Myst, or old Lucas Arts adventure games such as Sam and Max or Day of the Tentacle, this will be right up your ally. Really good puzzles keep the player involved, while the story keeps things rolling. Only problem I see is some players might say "where's the action," or get stumped by a puzzle. But really, that's the point of adventure games. There is little to no "action", ie to combat, and the puzzles are the heart of the game. Give it a try, you might like it more than you thought you would.

Strengths:

Story line & Graphics

Weaknesses:

Some poor character voice acting

Posted Aug 27, 2003 - I played the PC version- and wished that I could have played it on the XBOX instead. The story is compelling- the visuals are stunning. My biggest complaint is that the action can become a little stagnant as you wait for you characted to walk across the screen. I am eagerly waiting for Syberia 2- coming out this Winter!

Strengths:

Solid graphics, good and engaging characters.

Weaknesses:

A pc adventure game mapped onto a video game: controls, controls, controls!

Posted Oct 6, 2004 - The Resident Evil series have taken some serious criticism because the characters move so awkward and woodenly. Syberia has inherited perhaps an even more awkward control setup. Moving across the screen can be very slow, and turning in tight spaces frustrating at times. Further, when entering a room, sometimes up suddenly becomes down or the character turns herself around. But I kept playing because I wanted to see how the story ends. I like adventure games, the great Sierra ones come to mind, but adventure games have not matured as a genre and since fallen on rough times. Syberia on the Xbox is almost identical to the pc version. So its has the same nice pre-rendered backgrounds, band the same classic adventure weaknesses. You get find an item, keep it in your inventory then use it later. Pixel hunting is replaced by having your character stand close enough to an object to interact with. This is a plus, but because your character can be so slow (especially when going up and down stairs!) moving becomes frustrating. On the good side, the voice acting is great, and the story has its moments. Although, thinking back on it now, the story does have a fair amount of cheesiness to it. The world itself of Syberia is a delight as well as seeing the various objects to interact. The puzzles are not too unfair or obtuse (as in Myst), but not always a cakewalk. If you really enjoy adventure games, this is definitely worth a look. But if you have given up on the genre until it can fix its inherent problems, this will only frustrate and put you of further.

4 Star Review Syberia

Strengths:

Great mystery, story , and Graphics

Weaknesses:

Not really made for consoles

Posted Sep 21, 2005 - Syberia for X-Box is a port of the Point and Click adventure made for PC a few years before this was released. It is very slow paced and involves alot of searching the screen for clues that may be too small for the average player to see. It controls too still with the gamepad, as this type of game is made for mouse movement. If you could get past the fact that it is a port of a PC game, and you enjoy great mysteries, Syberia is adefinitely a bargain at price it is now selling for. Especially since it takes advantage of full HD at 1080i.

4 Star Review Syberia

Strengths:

Graphics, adventure genre

Weaknesses:

Slow character movement

Posted Aug 5, 2005 - Personally, I enjoy the old Myst games and all sorts of adventure type games. Syberia fits prefectly into this category. Walk around, solve puzzles and move on to the next one. My biggest complaint about this game is the main characters slow movements. It is hard to get her to move from one place to another in any decent amount of time. However, other than that, the game play was just as I had expected and I plan to pick up the 2nd installment of this game.

4 Star Review Review for Syberia.

Strengths:

Nice graphics, spoken dialogue, pretty straightforward puzzles. Cool cinematic cutscenes.

Weaknesses:

Point and click control too sensitive with controller, too many "invisible" walls, icon "hotspots" not always easy to point to with, may be too slow for those not into graphic adventures.

Posted Aug 2, 2005 - This is a definite throwback to the good point and click graphic adventure games of Lucasarts and Monkey Island. If you're into those kind of games, you know exactly what to expect, lots of dialogue, lots of reading clues, lots of "find the part" puzzles. If you're don't like the graphic adventure games of old, then this one won't change your mind, as there is no action and slow pace as typical of graphic adventures. The plot and story are interesting and the automotons are cool. The major flaw in the game is that as a point and click adventure, they are intended for the computer so the mouse is best and really speeds things up to find the "hotspot" icons. Instead the controller is used to move the character herself, which is tough as sometimes you can't quite point exactly at the icon you want so instead go somewhere else so you you have to back up, do it again. Happens a lot. Also exploration is not too free roaming as the backgrounds are mostly prerendered so you may see what looks like a path, but your character will run into the dreaded "invisible" wall. Sometimes to get to a next screen you have to be at just the right spot... even though the path is open, you have to be at just the right part of the screen or else, "invisible" wall! Again, this game would work best with a mouse so these issues wouldn't be as noticable as they are with the controller. But really, the game is very atmospheric, (not great but) decent spoken dialogue, very pretty nature scenes, puzzles that seem at first illogical but then make sense with nothing that's mind pounding difficult, and the game is very linear. A transitional "solution" track plays when you solve a major puzzle so its nice to get the encouragement. So a nice mellow game for those with the time and curiousity. Not for the impatient or action starved, you will get frustrated/annoyed with some of the puzzles.

4 Star Review Syberia (Xbox)

Strengths:

Good graphics and sounds, good storyline,

Weaknesses:

Controls are a bit clunky, voice acting is passable

Posted Nov 13, 2005 - Syberia is an adventure game, ported over from the PC. It involves Kate on a quest to find out what has happened with a toymaker and his inventions. The game looks good and sounds good, though the voice acting has some good and bad moments. The controls are a bit hard to use, due to the console conversion, though it takes a bit to get used to. Adventure fans should take a look at this game.

4 Star Review If you like a great story and love adventure games, this is for you.

Strengths:

Great story, beautiful graphics and music, great ambiance. Old school adventure gaming for those who miss the bygone ear.

Weaknesses:

Shoddy voice acting and not everyone misses the bygone era of adventure gaming.

Posted Sep 24, 2005 - In this game you play Kate Walker, a lawyer from New York who is sent to France to secure a deal with the fading Voralberg toy company. If you've ever played any and enjoyed or loved the old adventure games from the old PC days then don't read any further, just play it. Even if you don't like, or never experienced those games give this a shot. Crafted by author Benoit Sokal, this game offers a unique experience not found in other games. The game starts with Kate in France discovering that the person set to finalize the takeover of Voralberg toys had died and the prospect that there might be an unknown heir someone in the world, and thus the search and game begins. You are treated to lush scenery all across the world and discover a deeper story than the one you were initally searching for. The background graphics are beautifully drawn. Gameplay is pretty simple as you simply manuver Kate around and talk, look and manipulate items and solve puzzles with them, however it is the immersive story that keeps you playing. You find diaries, make phone calls and talk to all sorts of people to uncover clues. The music in this game is also beautiful as it ads a great ambiance to the game. The voice acting however is not as good, especially compared to today's standards. I really cannot recommend this game enough, especially if you like this genre. If you don't you probably know why and it may not be for you. If you have no experience with it and like a good story and figuring out puzzles, then give this a shot.

Weaknesses:

Controls and Voice acting.

Posted Jul 4, 2005 - Syberia is a adventure game for XBOX. The game has a decent storyline to follow as you play along through the various environments. The environments themselves are prerendered. Something that you would expect on the original PSX. But that doesn't change the fact that the world is unique. Controls for the game are rather stiff and don't convert well from the PC version. On a plus side Syberia 2 is out if you really enjoyed the story in this one. Give the game an average 3 stars.
